blog September 24 - A Wedding Gift - 3 generations in a row.

This portrait drawing in pencil, 50 x70cm, is drawn with pencils HB, 2B, and 4B and feathered with different thicknesses and sizes of feathers to obtain softer transitions.

It is important when drawing a collage with 3 generations, where the age differences can be large, that you opt to make a portrait drawing where they are all the same age.

In this case, the grandmother is 94 years old, the mother is 72 and the daughter is 32.

That is why I chose to draw the 3 generations at the age of thirty for the ladies, that I could portray the youthful appearance, so that the resemblance and the typical family facial features are more noticeable. Of course I had to work with the analog photos from the past, which were enlarged so that I certainly don't miss any details.

First I chose to let the three portraits flow into each other. The grandmother is placed at the top left, then the mother is placed on the right and finally the daughter is placed at the bottom in the middle, so she is most prominently visible, which is also the intention, since it is her wedding gift.

I only draw final details, such as the waves in the hair, after I have drawn the three portraits.

This allows the hairs to flow nicely into each other and thus form one whole in the final drawing.
