Blog May '26 - Communion and Spring Festival

As soon as spring announces itself with its beautiful colors, communion and spring celebrations quickly follow in the months of April and May. A smiling child's face and beautiful outfits make this drawing a fun and beautiful memory to capture.

This will become a portrait drawing in pastel, drawn with Pan Pastel in combination with pastel pencils.

Important contours of the face, eyes, mouth, nose, and hair are gently sketched with an H.B. pencil. As the drawing progresses, these soft pencil contours will blend with the pastel colors.

Starting with the highlights in the eyes, the eyes are drawn and colored with pastel pencils.

A combination of various soft Pan Pastel shades forms the base of the face.

On this base, highlights and shadows are rendered using pink, orange, and various beige shades.

The graceful braids are drawn with Bister, Yellow Ochre, and Saffron.

The dark parts of the hair are drawn with dark brown colors, while the highlights are lightened with Bismuth-White.

The loose, playful hair along the head consists of fine wavy lines using the same light colors I used for the braids.

The colorful dress regains its beautiful colors in this pastel drawing.

The highlights and shadows are also taken into account.
