Blog April '24 - Rooster and Chicken - the temptation

The seduction ritual between the rooster and the hen.

This pastel drawing was made from snapshots of two photos.

After drawing the contours in pencil, I use Yellow Ocher and Orange Shade from Pan Pastel as a first layer and then draw in the details with pastel pencils.

Colors are mixed together using a fine feather duster.

The beautiful feathers of the rooster's tail are drawn with different gray values and finished with French Dark Gray and Titanium white from Derwent. Deep-lying feathers are feathered.

The Chicken is drawn in the same way as the Rooster, although I do take light and shadow into account. The feathers of the chicken are highlighted with light yellow from Conté.

Finally, the legs and grass are drawn.

In the grass I have incorporated almost all the colors that I used to draw the chicken and the rooster. By incorporating the colors in the grass, everything becomes one harmonious whole and you create more dimension in the drawing.
